Join us for the first Stockholm PhD Winter School in Planetary Histories, 5 ECTS, November 23-26, 2026.
Course aims
The aim of the course is to explore what environmental history is and can be in a “planetary” age. In recent years, the planetary has emerged as an epistemological and historical category in its own right. Planetary perspectives go beyond the global: they encompass the geophysical and biological planet as well as political, cultural and economic orders. The course aims to provide students with an introduction to these perspectives, how they challenge us to interpret the past in new ways, and critically approach the epistemologies and politics underpinning planetary knowledge. We will explore how the material dimensions of the planet, and their interwoven relations with politics and economics, shape our understanding of history and compel us to think across new temporalities and timescales. Planetary histories are in this sense not necessarily “big histories”, but ways of historically accounting for how the human and the planetary intersect in particular settings.
Course contents
The course will feature a keynote lecture by Paul Edwards (Stanford), sessions taught by Julia Nordblad (Uppsala), Alexis Rider (Vienna), Tom Turnbull (MPIWG) and Jonathan Galka (KTH), and a field trip to the Askö laboratory in the Stockholm archipelago. Participants will receive feedback on their own work by The Centre for Anthropocene History’s faculty. The course is organized by Erik Isberg and Emil Flatø.

We welcome applications from PhD candidates working in environmental history and other historical subdisciplines, as well as STS, political ecology, environmental humanities, anthropology, or other related disciplines. The course is free of charge, and lunches and coffee are included, but students are expected to cover their own travel and lodging. If you are prevented from attending for lack of funds, please write to us, as we have some limited funding for travel costs.

The Gender Academy at Stockholm University is giving the following PhD course, that will be taught in October-December 2026:
Critical Perspectives on Anti-gender, 7,5 credits, Stockholm University
The aim of the course is to offer an advanced introduction to the expanding research field on anti-gender politics, which has sought to contribute understandings of the intensified mobilizations against LGBTIQ+ rights, women’s reproductive rights, and feminist, anti-racist and social justice politics. During the course, historical and contemporary, trans-disciplinary and trans-national perspectives on this phenomenon will be discussed, along with explorations of feminist and LGBTIQ+ resistance and counter mobilizations. Furthermore, the interconnection between anti-gender politics and other contemporary phenomena such as for example the rise of the digital manosphere, the institutionalization of right-wing populism and the resurgence of anti-immigration, white supremacist and authoritarian/neo-fascist discourses and regimes will be interrogated.
The course will be organized around thematic readings and lecture/seminars, spread out between October 9 and December 11. The students will be given the opportunity to delve into a chosen area based on their own research interests. Please note that Nov. 6 will be a full day, including open lectures by Elzbieta Korolczuk (Södertörn University & Warsaw University) and Haley McEwen (University of Gothenburg & University West). Online/hybrid participation will be possible.

Please see attached CfP regarding a workshop in Gothenburg on 13-14 May 2027: The Midnight Lands. Olaus Magnus and the Representation of the Environment of Northern Europe.
The workshop will combine paper presentations with close discussion of selected chapters. You are most welcome to submit a proposal of no more than 300 words for a 20-minute paper, together with a suggestion of up to four chapters to be read in preparation, by 31 October 2026 to Cecilia Rosengren (cecilia.rosengren(a)lir.gu.se) and Joana van de Löcht (van.de.loecht(a)uni-muenster.de) The working language of the workshop will be English. We will endeavor to cover all travel and accommodation costs.
