Livet genomsyrar dagens debatter. Livets gränser utmanas av landvinningar inom genteknologi, AI-teknik och sökandet efter liv i rymden. Vår livsstil orsakar klimatförändringar och minskad biologisk mångfald, något som i sin tur försämrar villkoren för livet på jorden. Vi kämpar för att förstå hur ett gott liv bör levas och vad det har för mening. Samtidigt tycks det omöjligt att ge ett slutgiltigt svar på exakt vad liv är.
Men livet har debatterats i årtusenden. Precis som i dag har människor i det förflutna slagit vakt om livet, diskuterat det goda livets kärna och försökt precisera vad som särskiljer den levande organiska världen. Den här boken undersöker hur människor och samhällen från antiken till i dag har angripit frågor som dessa. I en rad fallstudier utforskar den livsbegreppens, livsformernas och livshållningarnas roll i vetenskapens, medicinens, filosofins och andra områdens språkbruk och debatter.
Livets idéhistoria bidrar med en rik förståelse av historiska idéer om liv och diskuterar hur livet kan avgränsas och analyseras inom historisk forskning. Syftet med boken är också att visa olika teoretiska och metodologiska ingångar till livets historia inom fält som biologihistoria, medicinhistoria, litteraturhistoria, filosofihistoria, vetenskapshistoria och miljöhistoria.
