SI/PASS Maths SIG webinar
Wednesday, 5 June 2024, 1-2 pm (UK time)
Title:
STEM peer learning session ideas.
Kerry Lawless and Amber Walsh Olesen, University of Galway Students Union CÉIM Peer Learning Team
Abstract:
CÉIM peer learning is offered to approx. 800 Engineering and Science students at University of Galway. The CÉIM team is constantly trying to develop Maths and other STEM-focused peer learning activities in collaboration with leaders, but this can sometimes prove difficult for staff with a non-STEM background! In this webinar, we will share what we have been doing in this area over the past year, what our leaders have used and found helpful, and what we plan to do going forward. We hope you will join us in discussing how to engage STEM students to really look at the process of Maths problem solving and AI in Maths/STEM peer learning sessions.

Hi Joakim,
I was wondering if the Strategy Cards have been taken down from the Google play store?
We can find the app available for Apple users, but cannot find an Android version. Is there one available or are they on a website by any chance?
Kind regards,
Órla
Hi supervisors,
Here's a reminder of the European Center for SI-PASS' activities for leaders (students) this spring.
We've had 40 Leaders join our LinkedIn group "SI-PASS/PAL Leaders in Europe" from a number of institutions and countries. Continue to push your leaders to join our group, since that will be our main way of communicating directly with leaders regarding activities that we offer, and an opportunity for them to connect with leaders from across Europe. https://www.linkedin.com/groups/12993570/
We have an online workshop coming up next Friday, 26th of April 1-2pm GMT/ 2-3 pm CET. Presenter: Becka Colley-Foster, Head of Careers & Graduate Employability, Edge Hill University, UK. The session is about how leaders can articulate their gained skills as leaders in other settings, e.g. LinkedIn profile and CV. So far, we have leaders from Loughborough, Lund University and Queen Margaret University signing up. Let your leaders know that they can sign up for this free of charge workshop here: https://forms.gle/FoNB58aFHuacyCPt5
We will offer personalized endorsements on LinkedIn to the leaders who join the session.
Best wishes,
Linda Dahlberg, Isabella Fairclough and Will Carey

Hi all,
Conor Start from University of Hull would like to share material that was talked about during the last SI-PASS Fika on March 11, 2024, see attached and below (for context)
Best wishes, Joakim (European centre for SI-PASS)
From Conor:
The University of Hull has had a University Library Volunteer Charter since 2012. The charter is used whenever a student volunteers with the Library and covers our PASS Leader, PASS Mentor and Library Volunteer roles. The charter is a formal way of students agreeing to the role and is similar to setting ground rules in a PASS session. It outlines the different roles, what is expected, and what support we offer to them during their time volunteering with us. On the last page we ask them to tick if they agree to share their information, for us to contact them and for their consent to allow us to take photos of them for promotional purposes. The students do not have to agree to any of these if they do not want to, but we often find they do consent. We use a mixture of physical and digital versions of the charter. We also have a similar charter for academic contacts to sign when they agree to support the PASS scheme within their department. We have found it useful to formalise our agreement to work together and it helps us to set expectations for all.
Kind Regards,
Conor
Hi,
We're pleased to promote the following webinar on Peer Assisted Learning (PAL) in Math, taking place on Wednesday 20th March 2-3pm (UK time):
**************
Using Peer Assisted Learning to support first-year Maths modules in Engineering and Physical Sciences
Nicola Allett and Pinar Ozbeser, Aston University, UK
This presentation focuses on a Peer Assisted Learning scheme implemented at Aston University to support first-year undergraduate Maths modules in Engineering and Physical Sciences. We will discuss the main features of the scheme and how it was introduced and evaluated using a Maths diagnostic tool. We will then present our initial analysis, which indicates that PAL has a positive impact on student outcomes (learning gain) when students are highly engaged in PAL. Finally, we will share the lessons we learned from establishing the scheme and invite attendees to share their own practice.
**************
