Call for contributions
The Nordic Marketing History Workshop:
“Creating consumers, creating markets, creating spaces”
6-7th of February at the Department of Economic History, Uppsala University
This is a call for contributions to the 4th workshop in Sweden aimed at scholars self-identifying as
contributing to marketing history. The epithet “marketing history” should not be read as an
exclusionary disciplinary label but rather as purely descriptive, aiming to include anyone currently
working with topics that involve historical approaches to media, advertising, PR and/or
communication. We hope especially to also be able to welcome colleagues working in our
neighbouring countries.
The workshop theme “Creating consumers, creating markets, creating spaces” aims to draw
particular attention to how marketing practices – such as market research, advertising, PR and retail
– have played a role in shaping societies by forging communities, structuring identities and creating
relationships. The political-economic conditions underpinning this role and the various tensions
between marketing theory, commercial objectives, actual practices and historical outcomes provide
fertile ground for new and exciting research. Prospective contributors to the workshop should
however not feel limited by the theme – all strands of marketing history are welcome.
Previously the Swedish Adverting History Network has arranged similar informal workshops in
Stockholm (2017, 2021 in Stockholm) and 2019 (Gothenburg). They have served as informal and
constructive fora in which scholars can present ongoing, or planned, research. As previously, the
upcoming workshop welcomes full papers, project ideas and/or oral presentations.
The tentative schedule is that the proceedings will run from ca 12 noon on the 6th of February to ca 2pm on the 7th.
Thanks to financial support from Ridderstads stiftelse participants can apply for
supportive funding towards the cost of travel and one hotel night in Uppsala. Depending on the
number of applicants, the organisers will have to decide how the funds are allocated. Participants
with longer journeys and junior scholars will be prioritized.
Apply by sending an email to nordicmarketinghistory@gmail.com
with
- your name and affiliation
- a short presentation of yourself
- your topic and how you wish to present it (paper or presentation)
- information about if you are applying for financial support, and if so with a rough estimate of
your travel costs to and from Uppsala.
The deadline for applications is the 29th of November 2024.
Welcome to Uppsala!
