Dear all, Save the date and submit your proposals for the 10th CBEES Annual Conference: Shaping Futures: The Baltics and Eastern Europe in the World [A cover of a book Description automatically generated]The 10th CBEES Annual Conference offers a time of retrospection and a time of new imaginings – a time to think about how the future can be (re)constructed. We are living through profound changes and upheaval. Reconfigurations of geographical, social, political, conceptual, and aesthetic boundaries and relations are taking shape. The present seems dominated by violence and destruction, and the world appears to be seriously, perhaps irreparably, damaged. Nevertheless, in this situation, can we think of ways of reconstruction? When we critically interrogate the present, we find a range of political, social, and cultural connectivities and frictions, as well as different modes of relating to the past. Can we then imagine and understand reconstruction not as a return to the past in its imagined determinations, but as an opening towards the new, the unknown? How would this reshape our relation to the past? Trying to make sense of the multiple uncertainties in the present that have been brought about by violent historical change, we want to make an effort to think the future. This is a challenge that requires courage. We welcome applications for panels, roundtables, and individual paper presentations from different disciplines, on topics related to the Baltics and Eastern Europe. Topics can include but are not limited to the following:   * The unmaking and making of centres and peripheries; the role and place of the Baltics and Eastern Europe in the world   * New and old imperialistic ambitions to redraw geographical and ideological maps and temporalities   * Movements towards and away from transnationalism and transversalism    * After deconstruction? Critical humanities and the post-critical turn   * Displacement, exile and migration    * The everyday of uncertainty and violence and their lived experience   * Cultural heritage – lost, remembered, forgotten, commemorated, restored   * The shaping of urban space: construction – destruction – (re)construction     * The age of the anthropocene - climate change, sustainability and other challenges   * Resistance and the (re)claiming of dignities, rights and freedoms    * Sustaining democracy and equality (and its gendered dimensions)   * Fear, hope and the politics of emotions   * Artistic and literary voices speaking to the past, present and future     The application deadline is 15 August 2024, 23:59 (Swedish time - CEST). Details: We welcome applications from PhD students focusing on Baltic, Central- and Eastern Europe with a particular interest in the issues of memory and history.  The summer school seeks to develop critical thinking in the interdisciplinary field of Memory Studies, and we expect interest from students from a range of subjects in the humanities and social sciences, including history, political science, ethnology, philosophy, aesthetics and similar.  Practical information: * Participation in the Summer School is free of charge. Dear all, Herder-Institute for Historical Research on East Central Europe (Marburg, Germany) and the Centre for Baltic and East European Studies at Södertörn University (Stockholm, Sweden) are pleased to invite you to an early career scholars conference "Negotiating Modern Ways of Life: Life-Reform Movements in Central and Eastern Europe since 1900." Date: 18–19 September 2023 Venue: Herder-Institute, Marburg (Germany) For more details: see the attachment Teaser: Since the late 19th century, a wave of issue-oriented life-reform movements has developed across Europe and America, particularly in nutrition, clothing, consumption, housing, healthcare and moral reform. Such movements became a corollary and a critique of industrialisation, urbanisation, mass communication, and societal change. The dynamically emerging modern ways of life, particularly in big cities, were frequently perceived as misdevelopments, so life reform movements aimed to construct alternative responses to these modern lifestyle trends. Animal welfare and temperance movements, tobacco abstention and vegetarianism had counter-cultural ambitions and a social reformist spirit. Abolitionist movements criticised bourgeois double standards and human trafficking and prostitution as the outcomes of poverty and social ills. As a reaction to the environmental problems associated with industrialisation, life reform movements searched for answers in return to nature. CBEES Annual Conference 2022 and Pre-conference Keynote Roundtable, 30 November-2 December

Welcome to the CBEES Annual Conference 2022: Where are we now? Perspectives on East European Area Studies today and the Pre-conference Keynote Roundtable: Reconsidering East European Studies: Potentials, Limitations and (Ab)Uses 30 November -2 December 2022, Södertörn University, Stockholm, Sweden Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine 24 February, and the ensuing war, is devastating for the country and its population and has far-reaching consequences for the entire region. Today, the subject of East European area studies is undergoing a process of violent transformation. For the past 30 years, as an area, Eastern Europe and post-soviet states have been defined as post-communist, and the sphere belonging to the former Soviet Union as post-soviet. “Post” has marked a transition, through a process of continuation and negation. The war may result in an end to this condition of “post”, since it implies the collapse of the post-soviet geopolitical consensus, which has implications for the entire region and beyond. The CBEES Annual Conference 2022 (1-2 December) and the Pre-conference Keynote Roundtable (30th November) invites critical discussion about the potentials, limitations and (mis)uses of methodologies (e.g., decolonial) that challenge hegemonic approaches in East European Studies/area studies. What is happening to area studies? Where are we now, as a consequence of the war? What new theoretical and methodological instruments do we need in a new situation? The conference also seeks to critically examine the current conditions for knowledge production within the area. How is knowledge produced, and by whom? How can we work in and with the area today? For the past 30 years, as an area, Eastern Europe and post-soviet states have been defined as post-communist, and the sphere belonging to the former Soviet Union as post-soviet. “Post” has marked a transition, through a process of continuation and negation. The war may result in an end to this condition of “post”, since it implies the collapse of the post-soviet geopolitical consensus, which has implications for the entire region and beyond. The conference invites critical discussion about the potentials, limitations and (mis)uses of methodologies (e.g., decolonial) that challenge hegemonic approaches in East European Studies/area studies. What is happening to area studies? Where are we now, as a consequence of the war? What new theoretical and methodological instruments do we need in a new situation? The transformation of the region also poses serious challenges to scholars. Continual redefinition of the “areas” (post-Soviet, Eastern Europe, Eurasia, New East, etc.) of study reproduces the hierarchies of geopolitical entities, languages and cultures reflected in the distribution of resources, academic interests and practices. Knowledge production always risks being ensnared in hegemonic structures (imperial, patriarchal, authoritarian) and non-academic interests and discourses (e.g., policy and profit-making). This conference seeks to critically examine the current conditions for knowledge production within the area. How is knowledge produced, and by whom? How can we work in and with the area today?
